You’ll also get ideas on how you can help wildlife survive and flourish in your neighborhood.

Director Brian Sylvester is pleased to announce that the Rochester Public Library, as part of its ongoing celebration of its 125th anniversary, has installed plaque commemorating the donors who created the the library trust funds.

The commemorative plaque was presented to the library by the Board of Library Trustees in recognition of the vital role the trust funds play in supporting the library, and to honor the individuals who made those invaluable funding sources possible.

The trust funds are one of three ways the library’s collection of books, movies, magazines, newspapers, audio books and television shows are funded. The majority of the money comes from the annual appropriation from the city during the budgeting process.

Interest earned on the library trust funds has been a consistent source of funding for the library since as early as 1900, when the Farrington Trust was created in memory of Walter F. and Jennie I. Farrington.

“The extensive collection and materials we have available at the Rochester Public Library would not be possible without the trust funds,” Director Sylvester said. “I’m glad we’ve found a way to permanently honor the people who made those funds — and the work they support — possible.”

Several of the trust funds, which amount to more than half of the total value of the trusts, are restricted for the purchase of specific types of books, or specific subjects, while others are unrestricted, and can be used for any purchases.

Although the trusts are used almost exclusively for the collection, some also allow for other uses, such as facility improvements.

The Rochester Public Library is celebrating 2018-19 as the 125th anniversary of the City’s incorporation of a public library. Several events are planned throughout the year, including an open house celebration in the summer and exhibits about the library’s long history in the city. For more information, visit the library’s website at www.rpl.lib.nh.us

Library Director Brian Sylvester is pleased to announce that the Friends of the Rochester Public Library held their annual meeting earlier this week.

At the meeting, the group voted to add the New Hampshire State Parks to the library’s list of museum and parks passes, which would provide members access to Pawtuckaway, Bear Brook, Northwood Meadows State Parks nearby, among others.

Tickets are also now on sale for the Sweet Art Baking Contest, where attendees will have the opportunity to sample and judge more than a dozen baked goods.

The Sweet Art event, a joint effort between the Friends of the Rochester Public Library and the Rochester MFA, will be held on Saturday, April 28 in the library community room. Doors open at 1 p.m. and the event will continue until 3:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $5 and are on sale at the library circulation desk. All proceeds go to supporting the library and its programs, and the winner of the baking competition will receive a custom apron. There will also be a reception in the Carnegie Gallery hosted by the MFA. The Friends are currently seeking additional bakers for the event.

Anyone interested in baking may sign up at the circulation desk. There is a $5 fee to participate.

In May, the Friends of the Library will sponsor a selfie booth outside the library for Free Comic Book Day on May 5. Visitors will have the opportunity to take selfies wearing comic book themed masks provided by the Friends of the Public Library.

“The Friends are an essential resource that the library depends on to keep our programs fresh and engaging,” Director Sylvester said. “I am grateful for their dedication and continued support of our mission.”
