Speaking for Wildlife presenter Christina Keim will present Birds, Bats, & Butterflies: Keeping Common Wildlife Common In New Hampshire.

Have you ever seen a bear in your backyard? A mysterious hawk flying over your birdfeeder? A giant woodpecker that looks like he just stepped out of a cartoon? Come learn about these and the rest of the “Backyard Dozen,” a group of wildlife commonly found in New Hampshire. You’ll learn how to recognize evidence of these species in your backyard and understand how they use different habitats. You’ll also get ideas on how you can help wildlife survive and flourish in your neighborhood.

This program is brought to you by Speaking for Wildlife, a volunteer project of UNH Cooperative Extension, the NH Coverts Project, and NH Fish & Game, with funding support from the NH Charitable Foundation and the Davis Environmental Foundation.

*This event is free, but registration is required. You can register at the Main Desk, or by calling 332-1428, or you can email us at reference@rpl.lib.nh.us*

Director Brian Sylvester announces that the Rochester Public Library has partnered with a collection agency to enhance its efforts to collect overdue items and fines.

Under the new policy, which is expected to start next month, the library will use a collection agency to help encourage patrons with more than $75 worth of overdue materials to return them. The cost of this service will be passed on to each patron whose account will be handled by the collection agency, Unique Management.

“This policy was developed with fairness to all library patrons in mind, and I expect this will only impact a very small number of library users,” Director Sylvester said. “When materials aren’t returned, they’re not available for others to borrow and in most cases requires us to use money that would otherwise be spent on new items to instead be used to replace missing ones.”

The library will continue to notify patrons that their materials are overdue and send courtesy notices about items that will soon be due, and patrons will have ample time before their accounts are turned over to collections.

Accounts owing $75 or more may be referred to collections, and will have an additional $10 charge added to their account. When an account is referred to collections, the account holder or adult who signed for the account on behalf of a child or organization will be contacted by Unique Management and will be held responsible for fines and fees.

To maintain patrons’ privacy, Unique Management will not be provided with any identifying information about the items borrowed.

ROCHESTER — City Manager Daniel Fitzpatrick is pleased to announce that the City of Rochester has initiated the process to renew its participation in the New Hampshire Public Risk Management Exchange’s workplace safety program.

The Primex Recognition of Risk Management, Effort, Effectiveness and Excellence (Prime3) program rewards communities that actively establish workplace safety benchmarks and institute best practices meant to help attain them.

In order to maintain its Prime3 designation, which its held every year since 2009, the City of Rochester must live up to those annual safety standards while also implementing 10 Primex-recognized best practices. As a result of maintaining the designation, the city earns a 2.5 percent discount from Primex’s Workers Compensation and Property and Liability programs.

Since joining the Prime3 program, Rochester has saved over $77,000 in combined workers’ compensation and property/liability insurance premiums.

“Rochester has made a lasting commitment to workplace safety that would not be possible without the hands-on involvement of every department and employee,” Joint Loss Management Committee Chair Brian Sylvester said.

Following a self assessment by the Rochester Joint Loss Management Committee, the city has applied for renewal of its Prime3 status based on its ongoing maintenance of the following 10 best practices or policies:

  • Tracking of Loss Experience Benchmarks
  • Active Joint Loss Management Committee
  • Current Written Safety Program
  • Prompt Claims Reporting Procedures
  • Temporary Alternate Duty program for injured workers
  • Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention Policy
  • Facility Inspections
  • Seat Belt Use Policy
  • Conspicuous and Visible Display of Required Federal/State Workplace Postings
  • Updated Harassment and Discrimination Policy
