ROCHESTER — Shawn Pierce and Tanya Hervey are both passionate about photography, and were eager to share their passion with the rest of their community, which they did last spring after launching the Greater Rochester Camera Club.

This week, the club celebrated its first anniversary at its regular monthly meeting. Gatherings feature guest speakers and workshops, as well as time to socialize and discuss photography. The group also dedicates time each month to critique members’ photos and reflects on what photographers did well with their work and what they can do to improve. The meetings conclude with a new photo challenge for the upcoming month.

“Both Tanya and I own photography businesses in Rochester, so we’re familiar with everything that goes into pursuing this as a career or just as something fun to do in your free time,” Pierce said. “We decided to start the camera club so that we could share our love for the art with our neighbors and be part of the city’s budding arts community.”

In its second year, the camera club remains focused on serving as a forum for photographers across all skill levels while also working to expand its footprint in the Rochester arts scene. This summer, the club will host its first photography exhibition at The Franklin Gallery at Riverstones Custom Framing on Main Street. The opening reception will be held on July 6, and is open to the public.

The group meets monthly each month except July and August, and membership dues are $35 per year on a May through April cycle. Anyone who is interested in joining may attend up to two regular meetings — those not featuring a speaker — as guests.

“Our goal is to build a strong community of photographic artists, and we’re really proud of how vibrant its become a year after we started the camera club,” Pierce said. “We want anyone who is interested in photography, whether they do it for a living or are just starting out, to take part so that we can all develop our skills together.”

Meetings are typically held from 6-8 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Rochester Performance and Arts Center, 32 North Main St. The next meeting is scheduled for June 19.

ROCHESTER– Mayor Caroline McCarley and City Manager Dan Fitzpatrick announce that the City of Rochester has reached an agreement in principle to purchase a portion of the Rochester Fair property.

Yesterday evening, a representative for the Rochester Agricultural and Mechanical Association (RAMA), which owns the Rochester Fair, notified City Attorney Terence O’Rourke that the organization’s board voted to accept the city’s offer of $450,000 in exchange for approximately 11 acres of property.

The City of Rochester anticipates that it would use the land to construct a new public works facility.

“This is an extremely positive development for the city, and I’m glad that we were able to come to a preliminary agreement,” Mayor McCarley said. “Having this land will ultimately benefit the city and its residents, and I’m eager to move ahead.”

“We have been working cooperatively with RAMA, and I’m pleased that those efforts have resulted in a mutually beneficial agreement,” City Manager Fitzpatrick. “This is an excellent opportunity to further modernize and streamline our city services for the direct benefit of our residents.”

ROCHESTER — On a chilly Monday morning in January, Fresh Vibes Cafe downtown had a small but growing group of diners inside.

Two of the booths were occupied by couples visiting Fresh Vibes for the first time, while a pair of regulars — one celebrating her 74th birthday — took a seat at another.

When he wasn’t working his way back and forth from the narrow kitchen in the rear of the restaurant, Rich Enis was stationed behind the bar updating guests’ tabs and keeping the music on point.

Enis, who moved back to New Hampshire from Chicago last year, decided to pitch in to help his sister with her restaurant, which is still less than a year old. Now 32, he attended middle school in Rochester and enjoys seeing the occasional familiar face — whether it’s a former teacher or classmate — come through the door.

Between those old acquaintances and the restaurant’s regulars, Enis is getting to know more and more of the people who frequent Fresh Vibes.

“I know a lot of people by name here, which is pretty cool,” said Enis, who had worked in the moving business prior to joining Fresh Vibes. “I was just helping out here on the weekends until I found another job, but I was having a lot of fun doing something different.”

Kris Enis opened Fresh Vibes last summer, and since then the restaurant has become an appealing downtown destination for people from all walks of life. Despite still only measuring the restaurant’s age in months, rather than years, they can expect many of the same people to come in on the same days every week.

“That’s what’s cool about Rochester,” said Rich Enis. “You know, if you go to Chicago and open a restaurant, nobody is going to care. But here, people notice.”

Saturdays feature live music from 9 a.m to noon, and on weekday mornings from 7-9, the cafe offers egg and cheese sandwiches with bacon or sausage on English muffins for $1.75, or it can be combined with a coffee for $3.75.

Fresh Vibes Cafe, 45 North Main St. in Rochester, is online at www.facebook.com/freshvibescafe. It’s open Sunday-Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday-Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
